After a much anticipated wait, I’m excited to today be launching a brand new website and branding for Erin King Photographer which I wanted to let you all know about. My old site was getting fairly outdated, almost to the point where I couldn’t bear to work on it any longer, as was my logo which I had been using since starting my business. I now have a new look which is fresh, fun and feminine and I think reflects me and my style to kick off my business in 2012. Check it out here!

Along with the new website and logo you might see some new marketing materials with regular offers making their way around and about and this also includes my new bi-monthly newsletter. My newsletter acts as a way to keep in touch with my clients, friends and people I have met going about my business to share my imagery, stories, business ideas and probably the most important aspect, myself. Please let me know if you would like to be added to my mailing list if you aren’t already. To compliment this I’ve also revised and refreshed my photography collections for both weddings and pets to better align with the demand for what products people prefer.

I really hope to make a bit more of a dent in the Melbourne market this year and start generating more business, with a much more focused direction. I hope to continue to gain your following and support and am hopeful for the future business of Erin King Photographer.

It’s an age old debate whether Canon is better than Nikon and vice versa but once you choose one you generally stick to it. The rivalry between Canon and Nikon Photographers is often played out with frequent and amusing arguments as to why one is better than the other….

I’ve always been a Canon user but have recently found that I haven’t been 100% happy with the results. So with a lot of research, talking to other photographers and trying out the gear I decided to make the change and I am happy to say that I am now a Nikon user! So far I am very happy with the user interface and the whole functionality of the camera body, which in my opinion is much easier to use and just makes more sense. I feel that this is what works better for me, its not a case of one necessarily being better than the other but it’s personal preference. I treated myself this Christmas and this is now my new kit. I’m looking forward to a fresh start to the new year with all new equipment and welcoming 2012 with my coming projects of re-branding and refreshing my business model.

This is more of a personal related post, but I figure I am my brand and my business, so why not share a bit about me personally and what I’ve been getting up to. Last week my dad and brother were over visiting from NZ, so I’ve been playing the local Melbourne tourist and tour guide for the week. They came over for the Spring Racing Carnival and the Melbourne Cup and this was a very important family day for us this year. Originally my step-mum, Annette, was attending who sadly passed earlier this year after a brief battle with cancer. My dad wanted to honor the trip and pay homage to Annette, who would have wanted us all to still go along. Along with Annettes daughter Kelly and partner Iri (who you might remember I photographed earlier in the year), we made it a family day and a day of celebration and remembrance. It was my first time attending the Melbourne Cup day and I must admit after everything I had heard, especially the horror stories about GA, it was actually rather tame but a really great day and for the first time I managed to back the winning horse, Dunaden, in the cup race! Stoked about that! We had some of the best seats in the house directly across from the finish line with a perfect view. These photos were mostly taken my partner Chris with our new Fuji X100 digital cameras, which I will be posting all about soon also.

Just letting you all know I’m moving to Melbourne later this year and my business is coming with me. Business is going really well here, but it’s time to move on and challenge myself to make a go of it somewhere bigger and better. I plan to continue shooting weddings over there and expand my portfolio to include more editorial and commercial work also. So spread the word, if you know of anyone planning their wedding in Melbourne feel free to refer them my way.

This is also the start of more travel plans to go further abroad within the next year or so. Having got the travel bug from my last short stint almost a year ago now, I can’t wait to get exploring the rest of the world again. I love Wellington and although it has been my home for the last 10 years, there is so much more out there, so much to see and do and to photograph along the way. One thing I definitely won’t miss however is the weather!

Many of you will have seen or heard about the copyright story featured on TV1’s Fair Go this week. As it’s something I feel passionate about I wanted to view my thoughts and concerns about it and I welcome your feedback as well. Unfortunately Fair Go’s story only presented one side of the current copyright situation in NZ, and they failed to get comment from the NZIPP, AIPA or any other industry body to have the right of reply from the Photographer’s point of view. Photographer’s have been battling for a long time now to try and retain the copyright of their work and get the legislation changed to reflect this. New Zealand is one of only a few countries left in the world that still has what’s known as the “Commissioning Rule”. Photos that we create are pieces of art and they are each unique. They are created from that Photographer’s own creative eye, technical ability, knowledge and skill base, blood sweat and tears (you get where I am going with this) and you are simply the subject. If a Photographer doesn’t own the copyright to the art/imagery they create what will they ever have to show for themselves? How will we promote ourselves and gain recognition for being highly regarded in our field of work, if we can’t display our images and enter competitions etc? Our photo’s are our livelihood and our stories, if we aren’t allowed to keep these, how is this industry expected to thrive? If a parent has portraits shot of their child, what have they got to loose or fear with the Photographer keeping the copyright of those images? If their images are displayed either online, in a portfolio, or in an advertisement if anything in my opinion I think the parent should be flattered that a) they have a gorgeous child who will be admired where ever they are seen, b) the Photographer took some great shots they are are proud of and want to promote themselves with. Only a parent knows what it means to have to protect their child and this is not a point of view I can speak from, but intelletual property rights, especially for original art works, surely must also be protected.
